Jeni Bern and Ronald Samm perform as Karolina and Ladislav in The Two Widows with the Birmingham Opera Company, as part of the Smetana 200 Festival in Litomyšl, Czech Republic. The new production is directed by Lorenzo Ponte, with Lada Valesova as musical director.

In summer 2023, Birmingham Opera Company hosted the 13th European Opera Directing Prize. The €25,000 prize was awarded by Camerata Nuova. That prize is enabling the winning team, headed by Lorenzo Ponte, to create their new production of the Birmingham Two Widows to mark the bicentenary of the Smetana’s birth. The Birmingham version of The Two Widows was created by Graham Vick and Christopher Willis, with sung text translated by David Pountney. 

Jeni Bern makes a long awaited return to Scottish Opera, as Professor Prentice in the world premiere of Anthropocene by Stuart MacRae. The production is directed by Matthew Richardson and conducted by Stuart Stratford.

Performances take place from 24 January in Glasgow, with further performances in Edinburgh and London, at the Hackney Empire.

Jeni returns to Scottish Opera later this season as First Lady in Sir Thomas Allen’s production of The Magic Flute.

Jeni Bern makes her debut at the Teatro Real as Greta Fiorentino in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene.

The new production, directed by John Fulljames and conducted by Timothy Murray, premieres on 13 February, with performances through the season until 1 June.

The performance on 16 February, will be broadcast live on Mezzo HD Live.

Jeni Bern and Richard Roberts can be seen on BBC4 and BBC iPlayer in Opera North’s epic production of Der Ring des Nibelungen, conducted by Richard Farnes. The performances were filmed at Leeds Town Hall in 2016.

Das Rheingold will be broadcast on BBC4 on 12 February at 7pm, with Jeni and Richard as Woglinde and Mime respectively.

Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung will all be available exclusively on BBC iPlayer with Jeni as Waldvogel and Woglinde, and Richard as Mime.

Following acclaimed performances at Opera North last season, Jeni Bern reprises the role of Lilli Vanessi in Welsh National Opera’s revival of Cole Porter’s classic musical Kiss Me, Kate, directed by Jo Davies and conducted by James Holmes.

The production opens in Cardiff on 29 September and tours to venues in England and Wales until 10 December, with twenty nine performances in all.
